The history of the hotel
After the Liberation
The first projects and initiatives to change the appearance of Bazhdar were implemented after the Liberation. With the assistance of Todor Burmov, the first Prime Minister of the Principality of Bulgaria, the Gabrovo municipality was granted 1,650 gold leva by the government to organize a fire brigade (“tulumbaci” brigade) with horses and pumps.
The fire brigade in Gabrovo was founded after the examples of Odesa and Bucharest. It was housed in the inn’s premises, which was eventually transformed into a police station.
At the end of the 1950s, the inn was demolished and construction of a hotel began in its place. On August 2, 1962, Balkan hotel-restaurant opened its doors.

In February and March at the Etar Museum
In February and March, at Bulgaria’s only open-air ethnographic museum, you can enjoy a rich program of events, demonstrations and traditional workshops dedicated to Bulgarian crafts and customs.
