The history of the hotel

At the end of the 1920s or the beginning of the 1930s, a new guesthouse building was built at the foot of the Bazhdar region, which housed the official Turkish administration. In the courtyard of the inn, in addition to the two enormous stone barracks (kushla – the soldiers’ barracks), there is another one for the police guard and the district governor (kaimakamina), a Turkish bath, a gunpowder room, and a drinking fountain. The lower barrack was constructed during the reign of Sultan Mahmud II (1808-1839). The upper barrack was constructed next to the inn in May 1859, during the reign of Abdul Mejid (1839-1861). The basement of the first barrack was used as a prison and a gunpowder room. The two barracks were constantly garrisoned by Turkish soldiers (there is no data since when this practice started). The garrison soldiers patrolled the streets of Gabrovo at night.

After the Liberation

The first projects and initiatives to change the appearance of Bazhdar were implemented after the Liberation. With the assistance of Todor Burmov, the first Prime Minister of the Principality of Bulgaria, the Gabrovo municipality was granted 1,650 gold leva by the government to organize a fire brigade (“tulumbaci” brigade) with horses and pumps.

The fire brigade in Gabrovo was founded after the examples of Odesa and Bucharest. It was housed in the inn’s premises, which was eventually transformed into a police station.
At the end of the 1950s, the inn was demolished and construction of a hotel began in its place. On August 2, 1962, Balkan hotel-restaurant opened its doors.
